Poinsett Bridge drew me in visually before I knew anything about it. In the US, old world architecture is a rarity, especially in the South. Just looking at it, you can feel it’s historical gravity. I knew I had to paint it. Digging deeper, I learned that this bridge happens to be oldest in South Carolina, and possibly in the entire southeastern United States. Named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, it was built in 1820 as part of a road from Columbia, South Carolina, to Saluda Mountain. The stone bridge, which includes a Gothic arch and stretches over Little Gap Creek, may have been designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument. It’s just North of Greenville in the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve. In this composition, the the trees in the foreground out of view cast shadows on the stones. The fall colors and wet rocks 🪨 were so much fun to paint.

“Gothic Grace” is special, and the copper underpainting glows as the days light passes through your space. It was a challenge for me, but that’s what I love about art - the constant challenge of seeing something beautiful and meaningful, being terrified that I can’t do it justice, then executing the piece and loving the result.
